Indigo
Indigo, the most ubiquitous textile dye of modern times historical significance spans centuries, from the color of former aristocrats to the everyday wear of working commoners – from it’s role in colonialism to deemed super powers repelling insects, odours and healing. In today’s world of greater environmental awareness, indigo dyes used in the billion dollar global denim market compromise both aquatic and terrestrial environments as well as living micro-organisms within them.
This digitally-woven jacquard textile reflects an image of a greatly enlarged tightly cropped vintage indigo textile capturing a fold-over edge with knotted fringe. Viewed at a distance this overall image is dominant - up close it becomes subservient as an abstracted backdrop for a variety of dimensional objects that have been hand-dyed and stitched onto the surface of the tapestry within the shadow areas of the image.
