Gratitude
Series of lens-based wall works representing moments of appreciation for the extraordinary beauty of everyday wild flowers. Rather than being appreciated for their vital symbiotic relationship to a greater ecological environment they are often overlooked as merely pervasive weeds interfering with the construct of our self/socially cultivated and curated environments.
Works consist of two textile layers, each dye-sublimated with an enlarged abstracted floral image: a closeup image taken in situ during daily summer walks around the local corn field and a visual adaptation and interpretation of a scanning electron microscopic image (SEM) of that flower. Assembled they form an inside / out perspective of visual detailing both visible and invisible to the naked eye. Depth perception is enhanced with surface cut-outs in the upper translucent layer revealing imaging below.
Vital to the evolution of this project was the microscopic imaging derived from original SEM’s documented by Erwin Huebner, cell biologist and visual artist: erwinhuebner.com
Description: Lens-based imagery involving both photographs and SEM imagery, dye sublimation on textile, wood supports.
Dimensions: 72” x 48” x 1.5"
Project supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.
