As a conceptually-based mixed media artist, over the past three decades I have been engaged in the creation of an oeuvre concerned with issues stemming from personal experiences garnered and/or witnessed living in a utopian / dystopian world - one that is continually evolving and devolving. A world that ushered in life-changing technologies, touting plastics as the future, to one that is collectively overwhelmed with environmental anxiety and fearful of having technologically opened Pandora’s box of artificial intelligence.
Having lived in a world once actively engaged in demonstrations of love and peace, that now unapologetically disrupts through acts of hate and polarized divisiveness. A former world where gender activism led to reproductive rights only to be overturned decades later in tandem with a rise in domestic violence, IPV and femicide. A world that groomed educational blindness to colonization, whose eyes have now been opened to bear witness to the consequences of those actions.
And so it goes, on and on. This fish bowl of dichotomies has, over the years provided me with endless fodder to reflect and focus upon in my art-making practice. The work involves visual storytelling, the cross-pollinating of diverse materials and processes in service of greater conceptual intentions. And now, despite the gradual process of becoming socially and culturally invisible under the weight of omnipresent ageism, the conversations continue.
As a second generation immigrant to Canada, I acknowledge being a guest on this land and am grateful to be able to live and create work on the unceded territory of the Stó:lō Coast Salish peoples of British Columbia.
